Traffic jams

Once again Weymouth & Portland council road works dept have achieved what a city can not easily do stop traffic moving. I do not miss the inevitable daily nightmare of driving to and from Portland but now am wondering with the new road stopping short of making a second option to accesing Portland what is going to happen when 2012 Olympics starts/ One for you all to ponder and give your thoughts and comments back

THERE CERTAINLY WS ALOT OF SMUGGLING IN AND AROUND PORTLAND AND THE CHESILBEACH HAVE YOU EVER READ THE BOOK "MOONFLEET" BASED ON SMUGGLING TALES. I HAVE FAMILY LINKS WITH BOTH DEVON AND CORNWALL MY GRANDFATHER SAILING FROM DEVONTO PORTLAND IN HIS BOAT THAT HE WAS GIVEN FOR HIS 21st BIRTHDAY AND REFUSING TO RETURN HOME.HELIVED OFF THE SEA AND WAS SAID TO HAVE SHOT A REVENUE MAN ON WHAT PORTLANDERS CALL THE HAM. HE DID HOWEVER COME FROM GOOD STOCK AND WAS USED TO SERVANTS IN THE HOME. THEN ON PORTLAND THE REAL MAN CAME OUT AND I AM PROUD TO BE OF HIS STOCK

Hi Peter :-) all that mud didn't stop the smuggler's that were common back in the day !

I expect Portland has a few smugglers caves and pirate tales, I'll have to check the family tree record's see if I've got any Cornish ancestors that went your way - I've found them in Illfracombe (Devon) and Weston (Somerset) - they were all fishermen or naval/boat types - surname Barbery / Barbeary Barbary and variants - my theory is they were nicknamed after the Barbary pirates (the British name for people from the Barbary States, Algiers, Morocco etc. North Africa) - has yet to be proven mind, they could have been regular UK rouges =)
