Portlanders!

Portlanders online!

I'm a sceptic. I don't believe in ghosts . But I love to hear ghost stories or get involved in ghost watches or whatever. I'd love to hear of any accounts here on the island. This site would be a great repository of any folk tales or folk lore.
For a sceptic, I've got a huge interest in the supernatural, and if there's a book or article you can bet I'd head straight for it. Especially anything to do with Dorset & doubly especially anything on Porland. I'd love to be involved in a serious investigation.

I have no reports or experiences of apparitions on the island, but, i have done E.V.P in certain areas and obtained some good results. I was also acording to a christian friend of mine, possessed or taken over while doing photography at a certain point at the High Angle Battery.

I got involved in organizing a Halloween midnight walk a few years ago & I took people down through Church Ope & up through the Pirates graveyard. (before it was as neat & tidy as it is now). We didn't see anything (of course) but we had a real laugh...

Not exactly a ghost story but very strange. Many years ago I did see intermittent white lights coming out of the sea near what was the degaussing range near Portland harbour. I watched them through binoculars for about 10 minutes as they rose into the air and disappeared. This was 2.00 a.m. I phoned Lulworth coastguard, they had no idea what these lights could have been.

Interesting story Jim,maybe it was something connected with AUWE that wasn't intended to be seen?
I no there is a Portland legend regarding the 'Portland Tow' dog.Stories suggest he haunts the cliff tops around Cave & Blow Hole on dark nights. Its not a place I would walk at night as its quite remote on the cliff edge.
In St.Georges Churchyard, there is a well known statue by the path.An Angel pointing up to the heavens. As kids we were told the eyes of the Angel always followed you and pointed at you when you past it! That may account to why vandels may have since severed the pointing fingers off.....

Over the last couple of years i have been brave enough to explore various Bunkers,Tunnels,Gun Batteries/Magazines,that are not boarded/blocked up.With the help of a small torch & camera, this reveals a whole new world which needs some nerve & bravery.I would add I never trespass, climb fences or cliffs etc!
Last week I ventured deep into the Verne High Angle Batteries, the further you venture the cleaner they become inside, less rubbish etc.Ive taken some photos, they all look very similer inside...mainly clean or whitewashed red victorian brickwork. No damp or water, sturdy well built and completely dry inside.
If your a Spirit/Ghost believer, well I have recorded 'Orbs' or 'Light anomolies',I contact the Dorset Paranormal Society who have conducted an investigation here but recorded no evidence of anything unusual or strange.
I think this area and the tunnels need a good clean-up again & I would gladly volunteer my services/help in clearing the years of accumulated rubbish,as long as I have a good battery in my torch im okay.Ive never seen a ghost so i cant say i am frightened of these places!

The Royal Manor Theatre has a Ghost, I was tape recording some sound effects in the 80's, and when I played back...there was a Operatic singing voice, which was only just hearable. And yes, it was a fresh tape. I have also heared footsteps and doors closing when I have been there on my own setting lights for plays. To be honest, I am a little used to it now, so it doesn't really bother me. Andy

Years ago on Christmas day, my Grandpa was walking the dog towards the Bill from Southwell on, as far as I can remember, the West Cliff. A man walked towards him from the Bill direction and as they met Grandpa said "Hello" and "Merry Christmas" and the man smiled. Seconds later my Grandpa turned to see what the dog was up to and there was the dog but no sign of the man he had just spoken to.
I have spoken with some one else who has experienced this. My Grand parents were very straight and would not have any reason to lie.
Also, I have had things 'move around' in a property on Weston St. and have taken photo's showing 'Orbs' there. I am not convinced that the photography of Orbs is nothing more than humidity/dust although I do have one picture that shows rather a bright Orb/light anomaly which is possibly questionable. As for the moving of objects. I really cannot explain. It is always the same objects, not so much moved but turned around..... Odd...
