Sorry Readers, I made a slight Boo Boo! The Charlie Drake film was actually called "Petticote Pirates" I don't recall the Film Peter Mentions "Out of Season" but I do remember Susan George in "Straw Dogs" (what red blooded male would forget it?) Another Film made on Portland I have just Re-counted..."Further up the creek" David Tomlinson and the superb Peter Sellers. Any More for Any More?

I have always been interested in the subject of Portland on film.I remember in the mid-seventies the drama starring Robert Powell 'Hannay' was filmed here. Some film location books state the film, 'The 39 Steps' featuring Robert Powell as Richard Hannay;was also shot at the same time on Portland.
This week i managed to obtain a DVD copy of 'The 39 Steps,so spent a cosy afternoon watching the film.Although i enjoyed watching Robert Powell swinging on the minute hand of Londons 'Big Ben',there was nothing connected with Portland,no coastal scenery etc.So i would as much to say 'The 39 Steps' was not filmed here, but at Pinewood studios & Scotland as mentioned in the credits.Ive never seen the 1970s drama 'Hannay', but i would imagine it portrays a similar script.Sadly,we have to discount this film as 'one of ours' as the film location books are incorrect!
In the 70s there was a fresh fish shop(Hannay Bros) at the bottom of St.Marys Street,(Weymouth),I cant say if this name has any connection with the Portland filmed drama?

Ive dusted off the cobwebs from a 1935 Portland guide, which was in the attic. It gives reference to the following Portland film/screen credits:
The Flag Lieutenant....starring Henry Edwards
The Middle Watch......starring Owen Nares
The White Ensign ......starring Molly Lamont
Jack Ahoy................starring Jack Hulbert
Midshipman Easy........starring Hughie Green,Margaret Lockwood & Harry Tate.

Records show that the first Portland film was made before World War 1,Seymour Hicks played the lead role.
The famous 'Q Ships' had a long run and was filmed entirely on Portland.

I have heard of a couple of these films, but have never seen any on TV.
